Today's trip was up to Nordic Pass. It's been ages since I've been up there. Seemed a fitting time for a return trip.

Steve and I met JimK in Green Lake and then carpooled up to Hyak. We met Gary and John up there. Just after pulling in and popping the rear hatch, Opus (David) appeared. He saw us and decided to head up with us to Nordic Pass. David brought ski and the rest of us just had snowshoes. The plan would be to stick together until Nordic Pass and then David would drop down the other side to complete a larger loop while the rest of us returned the same way we came in.

The trail leaves at a bend in the road (no parking, please be sensitive to the private property owners in the area) and immediately we crossed a small creek (.33mi,  2764'). Then it was uphill to the old RR grade which we then hiked for a short distance before heading back uphill.

Nothing is ever too steep. It's a good trip to do in higher avalanche conditions because there is no avy risk on this route. We continued uphill past "the pit", skirted a higher meadow, and then right after the meadow reached Hyak Lake (1.76mi, 3528'). David switched out to skis here but that didn't last long since skiing on a firm unbreakable crust just isn't that much fun.

We followed the blue diamonds that Gary had placed to mark the route some 40 years ago. This trip was a good chance to check the status of the blue diamonds. We reached Nordic Pass (3.63mi, 4140') and dropped out packs for a pleasant lunch. After a short stay we packed up and walked the short distance over to Windy Pass (3.93mi, 4060') where we said goodbye to David. David dropped down the steep slow to the groomed trail a few hundred feet below which was his longer but quicker ski route back to the car. The rest of us headed first back to Nordic Pass and then followed our route back down to the car.
