My feet are really giving me trouble this year but I still wanted to get out for a hike. I haven't been back to Goat Lake (off Mtn Loop) in several years so I figure this was a good option. I knew Steve would love the views once we got there.

Steve recently got a new car and it was time for him to get it out to a trailhead! We arrived, found several others getting and earlier start, and headed up the trail (which is really an old road). I knew there were two ways to the lake...the upper route which follows an old road...and the lower route which is all trail. We decided to head up the road at first but quickly changed our minds. It was after all just an old road and not all that scenic. So, we backtracked to where the lower trail peeled off and followed the river more closely. This was definitely a good choice.

I forgot how much I love this lower trail. It's so much more scenic. The best part is coming across some of the old sections of corduroy road. The old road was built long ago and went all the way to the lake.

I've been to the lake in the summer and it's a bit crowded with people but not today. Today was perfect. There were maybe 6 other people up at the lake. Best of all...the reflection on the surface of the lake was incredible. The surface of the lake was completely flat and reflected the peaks like a mirror. We stopped at the lake for a late but wonderful lunch and then started the hike back out (again on the lower trail). We made it back to the car just in time. We had pulled out headlamps at the lake just in case. With standard time it just gets dark so early. If we had been out another 30 minutes the headlamps would have come in handy.
