Avy conditions weren't the best this weekend so Steve and I decided to head up towards Bellingham and hike around Blanchard Mtn. The trail system up there is ideal this time of year.

We parked at the Sammish Overlook trailhead (1286') which has got to have one of the most spectacular views around. From nearly 1300' you can easily see down to Sammish Bay and I always remind myself that it is views like this that remind me how fortunate I am to live in the PNW.

We decided to do a counter clockwise loop so we first headed out Max's Shortcut up towards Lily Lake. We met some really friendly mountain bikers up near the lake 2.56mi, 2018'). It was the perfect day to be hiking or biking. We chatted for a bit and then headed up to North Butte. We stopped her for a nice lunch and had the place to ourselves (3.27mi, 2184')! We thought about continuing on to Lizard Lake but decided to instead skirt Oyster Dome (we'd been up the dome the last time we were out here) and then hike back to the car via the Sammish Bay Connection trail.
