The weather being so wet this weekend I still wanted to find a way to get out. I suggested Nisqually NWR to Steve and he was game.

We drove down, parked (along with a hundred or so other cars) and sorted out the gear. Steve was correct, the America the Beautiful Pass works here for parking! We headed to the boardwalk behind the visitor center first. I was hoping the Great Horned Owls would be out. Well the were...sort of. One of the adult birds was perched high up in a tree. No owlettes to be spotted anywhere. Oh well...

We continued walking boardwalk, lots of little birds about. Then we picked up the dike trail, a couple of eagles high up in a tree to the north. We walked the dike all the way out to the outer boardwalk, stopping for a short lunch along the way. We arrived at the far end of the boardwalk about 4pm. By then the crowds had thinned a bit (the NWR closes at dusk). We wandered slowly back to the parking area and while still on the boardwalk hear the sound of some seals in the water. Looks like they were heading out of the water and on to a couple of small islands in the refuge for the night. By the time we got back to the parking area there were only a few cars left.
