I think we were all looking for a light turkey burner trip. Originally the plan was to head up Mtn Loop Hwy somewhere but...weather, trails, low clearance cars... Dani suggested Oyster Dome and that one caught my interest. It's been a couple of years since I've been up there. I've never started from the Samish Overlook so I was definitely interested. We started early, meeting at my house at 7:30am and then driving up to the trailhead. We arrived to find several cars parked in the lot (WTA work party). The road is in decent shape even though gravel most of the way. My Jetta did just fine.

The trail (Samish Bay Connection) drops a bit after leaving the overlook parking area and then returns to heading back uphill before reaching the Oyster Dome overlook. I've usually been to the overlook when the weather was iffy but today...it was absolutely gorgeous.

After an early lunch at the overlook we headed over to Lily Lake and we were all surprised to find it nearly iced over. Lots and lots of frost in the shaded areas. I even managed a decent photo of some hair ice I found along the trail.

We headed back to the Samish Overlook parking area in a loop, so we took the Max's Shortcut trail.

Nice trip, good friends... I don't think we came close to burning off yesterday's turkey but it sure was nice to get out for a hike!
