Avy conditions weren't looking the best in most placed. Weather forecast was calling for blue skies. A quick call to Janelle and she was on board to head down to Rainier to hike up Mazama Ridge. A new trip for me. Definitely worth repeating. Any trip with these kinds of views of Rainier as well as the Tatoosh Range gets an "A" grade in my book.

We left from the Paradise parking lot. It's a short road walk to the summer TH. Then a pretty short, moderate slope to the top of the ridge. From there you can wander are far as the heart desires.

Besides awesome views of the surrounding mountain and peaks, we did manage to come across one porcupine. I've always thought they looked a bit like space aliens. It meandered around pretty slowly, I suppose it has that luxury with the thousands of quills it has as defense.

It was pretty darned warm on the hike. Rime ice had most of the trees plastered in the thick coating of flocking. The warm temps left a bit of a crust on the snow but with snowshoes, getting around was pretty darned easy.
