I hiked up Sahale Arm years ago. That time, we made it to about 8300' and had to turn around due to the time...just a few hundred foot shy of the summit. I had always wanted to return.

This time Yet joined me. It was a late summer trip. We saw very little snow but tons of hikers and lots of flowers.

The trail starts from the end of Cascade River Road and switch backs up, up, up, and....up before one loooong rising traverse to Cascade Pass. There is a nice stone bench there. A good place to ponder one's existence? We stopped for a short break and then head up. The trail crosses over Cascade Pass in one short traverse, then a few steep switchbacks and then the arm eases back as the tail meanders there and there sometimes with views of Sahale Peak, sometimes with views of Doubtful Lake below...sometimes with views of both.

Yet and I weren't out for some grand destination, well something bigger than hiking the arm itself. We just kept going up until we didn't feel like going up any longer. We found a nice rocky spot that looked like a good place for lunch and that was good enough for the both of us. We weren't in any rush. When we got back to town and I showed some photos, a FS friend pointed out our "lunch spot" was very near the site of a confirmed grizzly sighting the previous October. Hmm...

After a bit, time to head down. While I don't mind the switchbacks on the way up...on the way down it's somewhat frustrating to see my car down below but knowing it was going to take a couple of hours to reach it!
