Time for a solo hike. Something nice. Good views. Hmm....Carne Mountain? I've never been there in the Summer. It's always been larch season or covered in snow. I bet the views are good...I know the views are good. So off I went to on the long drive over Hwy 2, Coles Corner turnoff, Chiwawa Rd (wow...I forgot how that road goes on and on and on)...then up at the Phelps junction (I really wish this road wasn't so rock) and then finally my pull off at the trailhead at the end of the road.

It was looking to be a nice day. Warm for mid August. Nice blue skies. Should be a nice day.

The starts out on the same trail that heads into Spider Meadows. After a really short bit (maybe .25mi) the Carne Mtn trail heads off uphill on the right. The first part of the trail are switchbacks in deep forest. Good...helped with the heat. Even in the morning I could tell it was going to be a warm day. The trail is in good shape. Even with switchbacks if feels like the trail is a bit on the steep side but really not that bad. A few times the trail approaches the creek coming out of the upper basin. Below the upper basin the trail reaches a small flattish spot. Looks like maybe people camp here? Looks like there is access to the creek. I kept going up...a few more switchbacks...this time these are out in the open and then finally the trail pops out into the upper basin below Carne Mtn. I love this place. One of my favorites. A great place to camp. Nobody here today though. I have the place to myself. A few patches of snow left in the basin and some anemones poking through. How strange. Summer is nearing an and flowers I think are Spring flowers are still emerging.

After the basin the trail does a couple of long switchbacks to reach the saddle south of Carne. More snow here. Lots of flowers too. It is an easy walk from the saddle to the summit. I believe this is an old lookout site? No relics here if it was. Great views though north towards Spider Meadows, Maude, 7FJ...beautiful. I first did this hike as a larch trip with a small group of friends and we did the old Carne Mountain High Route. Fantastic Trip that I'd love to repeat someday.

Lots of summit time for me. I have the place to myself and I'm going to enjoy it as long as I can. Finally, it's getting late...time to hike out and start the long drive home.

Carne Mtn is one of my favorite trips no matter what time of year it is...I can't wait to go back :)
