I've done Umtanum many times in the Spring but never in Winter. Turns out it is actually a nice hike full of color...and a bit of ice...

After crossing the bridge and heading under the RR tracks, I headed up the trail passing by the side trail that heads up one of the drainages to Umtanum Ridge. Instead, I stayed low, following the trail that follows Umtanum Creek.

It's a decent trail. In some sections a bit narrow (looks like some minor slides have taken out bits of the trail). I think the trail continues a way up the creek to the base of Umtanum Falls which can be accessed from the other side via Wenas Road. I continued up the trail about 2.5 miles before turning around.

Lots of great Winter color out. Beautiful browns, reds, yellows in the grasses and trees. Really a gorgeous Winter hike.
