I 'd never been to Hawaii before so when the invite came out to head to Maui...I was excited. Even better, I'd get to celebrate my birthday there!

Karen, Jen and I headed to Maui in late February and spent two weeks on the island.

Haleakala - first attempt to head up there was skunked. Winds, freezing temps, black ice, and icicles hanging off the visitor center were a good indication we'd have to try to find a day to return for sunrise or sunset. First day was near nothing for visibility. We did return later in the week and caught sunset and a few fleeting glimpses down into the crater. I wish we had time to hike the crater trail but that will need to wait for a return trip someday. We spent one cold and wet night car camping in a wet, and windy campground. We couldn't wait to get off the mountain/volcano in the morning.

Birding - was pretty darned incredible. Such colorful gems they have there. Karen and I could have spent hours and days photographing the birds.

Road to Hana - very cool and I'd repeat this trip any day. We car camped on the far side with views down off into the Pacific. This driving tour was incredible.

Snorkeling - days and days were spent snorkeling. We stayed right in Kihei and it was a short walk out of the condo and across the road to the beach on the other side. We did do some short drives to other snorkel friendly beaches. March s humpback whale time in Maui and being underwater and hearing the sounds of the whales just off shore was amazing. We even did a day tour out to Molokini on a catamaran and that was great as well. Sharks, turtles, colorful fish...I'd love to return to do this again.

Humpback Whales - we booked a day tour to see the whales with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Absolutely incredible to see such massive animals breach. Well worth the cost.
